Moving From Free To Hosted WordPress

Posted by mstrismusic on June 7, 2008

OOOOh K…Here’s the latest Hosting news. I’ve gotten several readers who are on board. Now everyones pointed to two blogs..so far I haven’t had any down time. This is the old blog and this is the new blog

www.mstrismusic.com

WordPress support is closed over the weekend..so I will get it all straightened out early next week.
Musicians and anyone who wants to start a blog/site heres what I’m going through…. “MsTris’s Blog Experience 101″

I started with a free wordpress blog. It’s been working fine, but the possibilities of designing, and adding widgets was limited because free wordpress doesn’t allow java script. I found out from Sho Down over at Rock It Pro ,that I needed to have a hosted site to be in total control. I signed up with blue host because they give so much for 6.95 per month.

UNLIMITED Hosting Space (NEW!) UNLIMITED File Transfer (NEW!) Host UNLIMITED Domains!!! 2,500 POP/Imap Email Accounts , SSH (Secure Shell), SSL, FTP, Stats, CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MySQL, 2000/2002 Front Page Extensions, Free Domain Forever!, Free Site Builder (NEW), 24/7 Superb/Responsive Sales/Support
I already owned my domain through Yahoo Domain Service, and it’s paid for the year so I didn’t want to move it….
…So I signed up to BlueHost last Friday and installed WordPress 2.5 using Bluehost’s Simple Script application. I got a lil frustrated because I couldn’t see anything but I knew I had hosting. WordPress is installed, the next step was to change Yahoo’s Dns settings to point to BlueHost. Remembering I had not designed anything at BlueHost, I changed the settings but redirected yahoo to my free wordpress(here). BlueHost support was great. They showed me how to start designing through live chat which was fast and to the point. Blue Host gave me my temporary address(an IP numerical address), and I was off to uploading my new themes. What I didn’t know is it takes anywhere from 2- 72 hours for a Dns change. So I frantically typed in my main addy to check, while using the temp addy to design on last Friday,Saturday, and Sunday.

On Monday I noticed when I logged into the temp site..the address was clearly reading mstrismusic instead of a temp IP addy… yaaay. I was excited. I exported all my files to the new address. All the post uploaded, all the links, all the pictures, and all the feeds…great. The only manual thing I had to fix were my audio and video files because the new wordpress uses slightly different codes for inserting in post. Now by Monday the sight is looking pretty good. I continued to post on the free site, and copy the post to new site. The new theme and hosted site allows me to add all the widgets and plugins I could desire. So I spent basically a week playing around with things until I was satisfied. I am now finished and nervous about changing the Yahoo redirection. Friday morning is it… I’m going totally to hosted site. I go into Yahoo and point all my Dns, A names etc to BlueHost, delete my redirecting to the free wordpress and- and- and….waaalaaaa…. :-( lol
NOT!… Here I am with everyone still over on the free site and about 4 or 5 folks on the new site.
Today::: I’ve read in order to keep most of my traffic I have go back to yahoo, change dns to wordpress, buy a domain forward from wordpress.com for 10$ to redirect to www.mstrismusic.com, go back to yahoo, redirect back to bluehost, and then all of us will be together in one Happy www.mstrismusic.com crib….

It’s Sat., 8 days from my initial Blue Host start… and my site is pointing to two places. No Problem from BlueHost at all…so what do I do?..I write a post explaining all this, hoping that everybody will change links to www.mstrismusic.com ,and while I swap the Dns’ezzz and stuff’ezzz …..you’ll bare with me,stay posted, and continue to wordpress on with me :-) ….

My two main suggestion to all who want to go the WordPress route from scratch..
1.Skip the free wordpress if you plan to have a blog that involves java scripts and adsense.
2.Set up your domain, and find hosting on a site that supports the “latest” WordPress Installation 1st.

If I had to do the whole thing again, I would have had Domain Registration, Hosting, and Blog all under BlueHost instead of all the changes.

Mpc2500:Midi Notes In Numeric Order

Posted by mstrismusic on June 4, 2008

If you are using the Midi function on your Mpc2500, you’ll want the notes to go in chromatic order. This is pretty easy to do. Hit “MODE” then hit “MIDI/SYNC” to open the “Default Assign” screen pictured below

next scroll to the first midi note “37(C#1)”. Using the “DATA WHEEL” turn it left until you reach “35(B 0)”. You have just changed “37 (C#1) to 35(B )”. This is the lowest possible midi note on the Mpc2500. Use the “CURSER” right arrow and move to next midi note it should read “36( C 1)”. Use the “CURSER” right arrow to the next midi note which by default is on “42 (F#1)”, change that to “37 (C#1)”. You can see now that it’s going in numeric order, as well as midi note order equal to notes on a piano. In this lesson our next notes would be “*38 (D 1)” . Here is where your curser movement changes to get to the next level of notes. Your 4 bottom notes go from 35-38. Next hit ” Curser Up” function then “Curser left” to get to the first note on second row “40( E 1)”, following order change that to “*39 (D#1)”, then curser right to next note and change it to “40( E 1)…Continue through each bank “Banks A-D” placing each note to the right in numeric order. Now you’re set to play midi notes in order. This also sets the Mpc up to control your Vst instruments in order. Once you have your midi connections correct, if you are controlling something like the FL Studio Slicer, you can play your samples in order 1-36 , from the mpc. feel free to ask questions or leave comments….

Fried Chicken and Beats??

Posted by mstrismusic on June 3, 2008

I woke up this morning determined to make some good ol Fried chicken later for dinner.(all chefs feel free to leave some fried chicken recipes :-) …. Outside of several genres of art, I’m finding I love to cook . I did an interview a few years ago on NPR where I explain beat making to be similar to cooking ..

….but …I haven’t gotten chicken to a “MsTris put her twist on that” standard. I remember seeing a story on New Orleans famous fried chicken from ” Willie Mae’s Scotch House”. Hmnn… I’m thinking “that’s the kind of chicken I wanna make!” I googled the recipe and came up with nothing. Seems Mrs. Seaton has kept her recipe secret for over 30 years. Her resteraunt was destroyed in the hurricane. People loved her and her fried chicken so much , they helped rebuild the landmark. She’s 89 and has passed the apron to her great grand daughter, but the chicken is still the best from what I’ve read. Check out this clip about her and her famous cooking.

How this relates to music?
She truly has a passion for cooking and sharing her art with people. She’s obviously come up with something unique, even though it’s a popular dish. She put’s in the right mixture and creates her own masterpiece. This reminds me to continue to strive and do the same with music..
So the chicken is marinating, next I’m off to prepare the ingredients and cook up a musical feast. I’ll make sure my kicks are knockin, the snares eq’d, and my instruments are leveled before I make the beat. If I decide to use a sample, I’ll mix and eq that before adding it into the sampler. The sounds that you put into the beat is the recipe..the ingredients. Start with quality sounds for your beat. If you use muffled, muddy sounds, you’ll surely get a distorted beat. Once you get a solid “production recipe”, stick to it as the foundation and evolve your sound around that…. Great sounds in,your great style of “cooking up a beat”, and a great mix , may equal great beats.
I’m at a place in my production where I want to add ingerdients that make my ” ear candy” unique….Like Mrs. Willie Mae..I can’t give all my secrets, but I can get you thinking in new directions to give your music something different. I usually try to come up with new sounds to incorporate into the mix. I mangle some loops, or hum a tune in, or add effects. When you think about it,…..the possibilities are endless. Never be afraid to experiment with your music, just as chef experiments to make a new dish. Aighty I’m off to fire up the equipment..and cook up some new heat for the streets!

Monday Morning Goodies…

Posted by mstrismusic on June 2, 2008

Hey all, hope everything is going smooth. I went with BlueHost hosting for the blog and it’s been a smooth transition. Eventually I will get a custom theme, I’d like to design it myself so it will take some time. For now I’ve chosen a free one from the net. Here’s what the screen shot looks like:

There are a lot of cool themes and blogging info there. Scroll through and check em out BlogPerfume
I’ve transferred all post, and I’m adding the links today….
For todays production category I’m going to continue with a few Fruityloops Tutorials from the “Tube of You’s”…..

Rewire Reason To Fl Studio 8:
This is pretty cool and quick. I haven’t tried this yet, but it appears to be the way I read in the Fl help file ** hint hint..HELP in any application is your friend**….

Life1..Be Inspired

Posted by mstrismusic on May 31, 2008

Let The “Son” Shine In…

Charles Dickens:
“This is a world of action, and not for moping and droning in”
Musicians, artist, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, family and friends…please be inspired! If you are feeling discouraged in life, it is time to re direct that negative energy into something positive. This quote is a simple way to do so. The energy it takes to think about what you are lacking or to replay a depressing occurrence can be turned positive with effort. Do something active…go for a walk..clean the back yard..write..read..do some jumping jacks..do something to take your thoughts off that dark “blotch” in mind….stay active, stay positive,…stay inspired…
